Bulgaria!
The morning was something out of a dream. Bojan, the owner of the Guest House for Cyclists, offered us coffee, orange juice, cookies and buns. We had a engaging conversation with him about Balkan politics, something that has certainly caught my interest after embarking on this trip.
Before leaving, Borjan offered us a bottle of Rakija, an alcohol made from the quince fruit. We all had a small taste. He took our picture, we said our goodbyes and hit the road. I just can’t believe the generosity of the Serbian people.
Before leaving town, we picked up Bulgarian Lev and food at the Idea grocery store.
The three of us cycled, for the most part, nonstop to Vidin (50 kilometers). We crossed the border into Bulgaria without any real trouble (Isaac had to show a second piece of identification to the officer before entering the EU).
In Vidin, we stopped for a small meal and, later, a beverage.
Our hunt for accommodation in the city took time. Many of the hotels were completely booked or out of our price range. At around eight o’clock, we landed on one for 12.5€ each (which included breakfast).
I’m getting the feeling that it will be a little more difficult to find places to stay on this leg of the trip. This will be an exciting challenge moving forward.
Final EuroVelo 6 Sign in Serbia:
You are leaving Serbia. Don’t cry because it’s over - smile because it happened. :)
I’m missing the country already.
Bulgaria is the fifth European country that we have cycled in on this trip. It’s astounding how the moments add up. Onward!
