We woke this morning without any problem from the local residents regarding our campsite choice. This was to be our earliest cycling day as we left at just after eight o’clock.
The temperature was pleasant as we looked for a small town to have a bite in. It wasn’t far up the road when we encountered a small, but more than adequate, grocery store. The place was well cared for by its owners. New fruit trees were planted in the adjacent yard. Three older gentlemen shared an outside table with us. Language was a barrier, but we shared smiles. I enjoyed my sandwich and two different flavors of yoghurt. My new folding spork met the challenge.
Before leaving town, Slovakian man tried to help us on our way, but the barrier between our two languages was too much. In these situations, I try charades and simple words. I busted.
Fueled and watered up, we enjoyed a long stretch of cycling on relatively compact gravel.
Reaching a dead end, due to new bridge construction, we backtracked a short distance, found a small bridge to the main highway and stopped at a high-end gas station. The interior and exterior was decorated in an emerald green.
As the heat was coming on, it made sense to slowly order drinks and food while enjoying the air conditioning. We topped it off with a brownie and Turkish coffee. This gave us the spark for our final push of the day.
After moving onto a stretch of highway, I felt my rear tire get sloppy on the road. Sure enough, my first flat was identified. We stopped, and I gave it a little more air to get me to the next stop. This was, luckily, a slow leak.
Earlier in the day, we had planned on cycling to a pay campsite. This changed after arriving in Radvan nad Dunajom. We stopped along the Danube for a final meal at Penzión Mlyn. I asked about a room price and the owners quoted us 18€ each. How could we resist?
After dinner, I changed out the rear inner tube and adjusted the breaks. We all took a swim in the Danube. My beard was starting to get a little unruly, so I though it best to go clean shaven for at least the next month. Isaac was kind enough to lend me his electric shaver for the bulk of the work. After showers, we watched the women’s World Cup. The US girls beat England in the semifinals.
I’d like to see these fantastic players again.
