We decided to push a little today, rolling for over eighty hard-won kilometers.
Breakfast at the hostel was quite good. To start the day, I tried the vegetarian omelet and had a couple of smoothies.
Exiting Novi Sad, two boys helped us find the bike lane over a major bridge that crossed the Danube. Kelley had a pleasant talk with one for a large block of time. All ages are willing to help here.
We pedaled for forty kilometers, getting lost once, before taking a break in Sremski. For the first time, we experienced some uphill pedaling. One stretch, that took us off a busy roadway, was unpaved and rather rough. I prefer bumpy and peaceful to smooth and car heavy.
In Sremski, I had a hot sandwich and overdosed on espresso. This fueled the final leg of the trip.
We really picked up speed on the smooth flat surface on our way to Novi Banovci. At one point, Kelley called out that we were traveling at over thirty kilometers an hour on the flat. Thrilling!
I may be a little sore tomorrow.
At eight, we ducked into our first hotel for under 20€ per night (each), which also included breakfast.
We are within thirty kilometers of Belgrade and have booked a cheap Airbnb there for three nights. I’m looking forward to seeing what the Serbian capital has to offer.
After our stopover, we’ll have one final push through Romania to our destination, the Black Sea.
According to a rest stop sign, we’ve bicycled 2860 kilometers (1777 miles) from our beginning point last summer on the Atlantic Ocean in France. We have approximately 1580 kilometers (982 miles) more to go to the Black Sea.
