We left our hostel at an early hour bound for the Serbian border. There were two checkpoints, one leaving Hungary (and the EU) and the other entering Serbia. Our group passed through with no problem, passports stamped.

After about twenty kilometers of cycling, we stopped by an exchange. I was able to change out my Hungarian forints for dinar, the Serbian currency. The exchange rate was good. Right next door was a grocery store in which we purchased food stuffs. We enjoyed them on a shaded bench outside. Filled up, we rode inland to the city of Sombor.

Needing a break, we cruised to the city center and found a restaurant just off a large square. I ordered a couple of lemonades and an espresso. The waitress, after learning we were from the United States, asked, “Why did you come to Serbia?” I responded with “Adventure”. She moved to say that the country offered “beautiful women and good food. That’s it.”

We must be in the right country.

Having decided where we wanted to camp, we cycled on looking for the place. This time, it was no problem finding the site. The EV6 signage has been good in Serbia. It’s interesting to note that each sign has a unique quote. I plan to read as many as possible. Maybe I’ll share them through pictures, at least the ones which stir my heart.

After pulling into the campsite, we set up our tents. I strung a clothesline, and Isaac and I hung a few wet items that were holdovers from the hostel. I had managed to dry a few pieces on my bicycle rack during the day, lightening the load on the line.

As a group, we had our most social experience to date. The host opened up a common room, and we enjoyed the company of German and Polish people who were also cycling the route. Most were finishing in Belgrade. Several were teachers. One German woman spoke freely about the importance of meditation in her life. This was a reminder to recommit to the practice. The host served us several drinks and offered us fresh-cut watermelon. EV6 = Magic.

I loved the evening interaction and certainly hope to meet other fellow travelers as we move through Serbia.
