With a ten o’clock checkout time, and no place to be, we slept in this morning at Patio Hostel. After stripping the sheets, packing the bikes and consuming the 2€ breakfast, we headed out to explore Bratislava.
After a moderate climb, we entered Bratislava Castle, taking in the views and snapping several pictures. Charlie explored the inside while the rest of us stopped in for a coffee and a bite to eat at the base of the hill.
We had an authentic Slovakian meal with asparagus, veal and dumplings. After looking at it,I let the asparagus sit on my plate for awhile before consuming the course. I decided it should last longer than seven seconds.
Late afternoon found us in an inviting park on the north side of the Danube. I unpacked my hammock, read and took a snooze. Later, Kelley and I did our workout routine. The whole group played hacky sack. This game is another language I don’t speak.
After getting lost trying to find the EuroVelo 6 along the north side of the river, we cut our losses and crossed the bridge to the south side to find the alternative EV 6 route. I’m convinced that this was the right choice due to the fact that we would have been picking through neighborhoods with Google Maps for an eternity.
Highlights of the cycling stretch out of Bratislava included a long listen to some 80’s rock. Journey’s "Faithfully" coupled with the "X2 Mars Bar" from Billa certainly accounted for the best speed we have generated so far. Only luck saved Kelley’s new Odometer from a short.
After eight o’clock, an inviting lake presented itself. Without hesitation, we pulled the brakes, set the machines on the guardrail, stripped naked and jumped in.
Can anything compare to long days cycling, swimming and camping?
It’s soooo hard to leave this lifestyle.
Unfortunately, the sun had to set. We found a wild campsite just off the route, set up our tents and ate the food we purchased at the grocery store (Billa). I had a wrap and raspberries. Kelley offered me a crispy wafer.
