Deviating from the EuroVelo 6 route can place a person in a position where they feel a strong sense of stupidity.
After speaking with a couple of westbound cycle tourists (German father and daughter), we launched from our campsite late.
In an attempt to avoid hilly terrain, we stuck to the Canal du Centre. This was a blessing and a curse. For the better part of the day, we traveled southeast, sometimes on, sometimes off the mapped route. One highlight involved observing several large groupings of tadpoles. The larger the group, the more relaxed each individual seemed. Working together furthers species in the wild. Humans should consider taking notes.
A couple of choices didn’t work. The more mild of the two had us cycling down a road that was in the process of being resurfaced. Hopping over the concrete ditch, we were able to continue down a gravel path adjacent to the canal. Later, this path ended, giving us no option but to carry our bikes up a staircase, over a bridge then down another staircase (and rock wall!) to a trail.
I asked God why I was so dumb.
After a long day of cycling, we were encouraged by the fact that there would be a shower in the Saint Leger sur Dheune campsite. Getting a first visual of the campground sign indicated that it was designated RV. The "campground" ended up being a parking lot behind a gymnasium.
We freecamped in a French field.
Note to Self: When traveling, avoid accommodation expectations.
Today we had a big dinner on the curb of a supermarket parking lot. The hobo lifestyle was at its best.
