Due to the heat, we limited our cycling to the morning and evening hours. It’s always hard to tell (we don’t have odometers), but I believe that we covered over sixty kilometers.
Our morning breakfast stop in Worth was nice, but a bit odd. Upon entering, nobody on staff spoke English (I should have some basic German words down, but I don’t). With an eating gesture and a smile, we were given a table. Breakfast foods began coming out (bread, coffee, cereal). You could hear a tiny pin drop in the place as a small group of older patrons sipped coffee or beer and looked over papers. The staff readied for lunch as time stood still. I felt the same real / unreal feeling when viewing the final photograph in Stanley Kubrick’s film "The Shining". After finishing, dishes were cleared and goodbyes said with the eyes. Riding the bike helped define reality once again.
The heat has been something to contend with. During the baking hours, we found a park in Straubing, taking a dip in the Danube and sleeping. The hammock came out.
Cycling late into the evening again, we tried stopping at a pension. Laundry has been on our minds. The woman didn’t offer a machine, so we pushed a little further. Kelley spotted a campsite, and we found the machine we were looking for. There was no dryer, which won’t be too much of a problem. I have parachute cord and bungee cord on the back end of my bicycle. I’ll dry the clothing in shifts tomorrow.
