After washing clothes and working out, we pedaled into downtown Orléans for a modest breakfast at a local bakery.
It wasn’t until about two o’clock that we seriously began to cycle. On the way, we encountered what I now refer to as "gnat pockets".
These pockets of insects are a real treat to cycle through, a living paintbrush that coats the face and arms. Within the pocket, conversation stops, as it’s important to close the mouth to the onslaught. The mix of sunscreen and sweat causes the small organisms to adhere to the skin. Looking forward, the countless insects flying past give the impression of a warp speed jump aboard the the starship Enterprise. "Fly on the Windscreen" from Depeche Mode’s Black Celebration album came up during one heavy pocket. As we move deeper into the tour, all things are beginning to connect in a routine way.
As with any good trip, there is adversity and there is joy.
After stopping for an exciting World Cup match between France and Uruguay (France moved on!), we cycled to Sully. On the way, Kelley braved a water hazard across the riverside trail. The seemingly shallow crossing turned into a calf-high ford. I chose an alternate route.
Before heading to a nearby campsite, we stopped by the Castle Tavern for the remainder of the Brazil vs. Belgium match (Belgium continues). The packed place points to the fact that Europe is enamored with the competition.
