We summited the highest church tower in the world.
Getting up and out at a reasonable time, we set our sights on the city of Ulm, the birthplace of Albert Einstein.
Upon arrival, it was quickly apparent that Ulm was a special city. Ulmer Münster (church tower) dominated the city, so it was not difficult to navigate there. We climbed the 768 steps to the very top. It’s a fairly open spire, so taking a look down and out made my head spin a little.
From such great heights, there is often a fall. After having spent several days in Germany, I can say with certainty that the number of campsites is rather limited. This has prompted us to free camp on a regular basis. This evening, we cycled over twenty kilometers looking for a space. The area that we traveled was quite urban. As darkness fell, and necessity called, we chose spots back in the woods, (just off the EV6). The spot I picked to pitch was fine, I just had some initial concerns about the fact that ants were searching around in the thick leaves by, and under, my tent. I will note that they were uninterested in climbing the alien material. I do not believe that I harmed them. After setting up, I took a moonlit skinny dip / bath in the Danube. I think I’m addicted.
Note: Cleaning up in river water for multiple days in a row is quite satisfying. I’ve found that living outdoors in this manner makes entering civilized businesses (bakeries, etc.) feel a touch odd.
Kelley missed a couple of large sticks while clearing the footprint area for his tent. In the morning, he spoke of his sleepless night while holding up a stick that approached the size of a ball bat.
Tomorrow night will be better.
Quote (Albert Einstein): Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.
